What happened?

This whole ordeal is akin to an economy getting injected with fake monopoly money. The hacker used the fake money to take out real money and run away.

KelpDAO got exploited for almost $300M — the attacker exploited the vulnerability through LayerZero cross-chain bridge, minted 116,500 rsETH and immediately deposited it as collateral across major lending protocols

(Aave V3, Compound, Euler, SparkLend, etc.).

The attacker then borrowed large amounts of real ETH/wstETH against it (creating ~$200M+ in bad debt across platforms).

Usually restaked ETH is backed 1:1 ETH on Mainnet but the way LayerZero OFT works is that it can mint/release tokens on verified messages + based on decentralized verifier network (DVN).

The security is app-specific, meaning Kelp or any other protocols using LayerZero, can configure how they release the funds/how many DVNs are needed. Kelp set DVN to only 1 (via LayerZero) on Unichain.

What happened?

A tumultuous week for Bittensor. Sam, the founder of Covenant AI, the key driver behind the world’s first decentralized pre-training run — sold his stakes across 3 subnets (Templar, basilica, grail) and left the ecosystem.

Over $10-14M worth of $TAO was sold in the market, causing ecosystem-wide panic that resulted in broader sell-offs across subnets.

This is bad.... But also, kind of good.

Sam dumping the entire ecosystem made it crystal clear that there needs to be a better alignment mechanism between subnet owners and investors.

It highlights the deepest flaw within Bittensor ecosystem — centralizations within decentralization.

ETHCC happened last week and it seems like it’s very different compared to previous years. I went to ETHCC last year and it was jam-packed with projects across DeFi, RWAs, especially AI.

This year (according to the people who went) is less about building cool stuff and more about how do we deliver products & features that institutions would use — totally different vibes, and it’s pretty much sums up the entire state of crypto right now.

If I’ve learnt one thing in the past weeks, it’s “Breakthroughs” equals high value. Arguably higher value than “revenue” in DeAI.

Sure revenue is great, you generate revenue, you use that revenue to scale the business + buyback the token. Everybody is happy.

Sounds simple but the reality is not so simple. Most teams have to pick between growth or buyback (due to lack of resources). Pick wrong and you handicap yourself over the long-term.

So teams have to pick 1 and Templar picked going after breakthroughs/innovations.

The team quickly rose to #1 spot in Bittensor ecosystem extremely fast because the public finally realize what just happened (i.e. the breakthrough that decentralized training run is possible at scale). The breakthrough did not just happen in the last 2-3 weeks but already a few months, it’s just that no one noticed (me included).

No one noticed because there’s just so much information, so many projects around, it’s definitely harder to pick something out especially during the bear market.

With that said, I aim to be more astute. And I aim to point out some interesting patterns & projects I notice here + HIGHLIGHT DeAI categories/projects with highest likelihood for breakthroughs

1. Another day, another DeFi exploit

Resolv just had a major exploit where the hacker was able to use $100k to exploit a vulerability and mint 50M USR (stablecoin) — so far the hacker already dumped over $20M+

Not going to comment on the vulnerability but man.... this just goes to show the risk of DeFi

While unrelated to other DeFi projects, the exploit adds a blow to the demand for DeFi-related tokens.

Onchain activity has been down, DeFi-native yields has been down, Defi tokens’ been down across the board. The only way to expand is to capture value outside of DeFi (RWA = best bet) which is what major DeFi projects are doing.

2. AI remains the best leverage for investors BUT you gotta know where to focus

Conflict Between US-Iran

U.S. just kicked off major combat operation in Iran, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missiles, navy, and security forces, following Israel’s preemptive strikes.

The situation has sent crypto market 3% down with alts experiencing 5-10% decline during the period.

But 1 day after the start of the conflict, Trump announced that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes. Market immediately rebound to pre-conflict level.

This doesn’t mean it’s over, Trump has repeatedly stated that bombing will continue “uninterrupted throughout the week” or “as long as necessary” to achieve goals like dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities, degrading its military, preventing nuclear threats, and creating conditions for regime change/peace

If the situation does get prolonged, we might be in for an extended bear market.

20%-30% of global oil supply passes through The Strait of Hormuz. The narrow water way is currently in a highly disrupted and tense state due to the ongoing conflict.

If prolonged, oil price could continue to go up (supply chain disruption) ➔ result in drastic increase in oil price ➔ increase in inflation

If that happens, the Fed won’t be able to cut rate as fast ➔ risk-on assets like crypto will be in a slump for an extended period of time.

Hope remains as past conflict shows us an interesting pattern

1. Russia-Ukraine Invasion (Start: February 24, 2022)

• De-escalation happened 41 days after (war still continues though)

• Sharp dip — BTC went down from $39,000 to $34,300 (~14%)

• Took 14 days to rebound to pre-conflict level

• This happened during the start of bear market, right before Luna collapse

• BTC pumped 27% a month after conflict

• Dumped a quarter after due to rate hike

2. Israel-Hamas War Outbreak (Start: October 7, 2023)

• De-escalation happened 48 days after (war still continues)

• Mild dip — BTC from ~$27,800 to $26,500 (~5%)

• Took 11-13 days to rebound

• Happened during transition from bear bottom to early bull

• Pumped 28% a month after conflict

• Pumped 50%+ a quarter after conflict

3. US-Iran (Iran-Israel) 12-Day War (Start: June 13, 2025)

• Ceasefire came after 12 days

• Mild dip — BTC from ~$107,000 to $103,000 (~4%)

• Took 15-17 days to rebound

• Happened during bull (for BTC and key alts)

• Pumped 5-10% a month after conflict

• BTC hit new ATH of $126,000 in Oct

We’ve talked about how the focus has shifted to utility-focused infrastructure and how Web3 are pushing for enterprises & institutional adoption last week. We’ve also touched on the sentiment and conversations in the east — at Consensus HK where a lot of builders, family offices, and institutions gathered.

This week we’ll highlight conversations in the west — at ETHDenver where a lot of builders & community have gathered. I wasn’t there, but I have listened to a lot of talks, and bring you the most interesting insights (so you don’t have to). Will also share what I’ve observed in the market during the past week as well.

The conversations at ETH Denver are centered around practically the same topics as Consensus HK (e.g. shift from hype to fundamentals, stablecoins, payments, RWAs, privacy/compliance)

The underlying message across conversations is “Supply is solved but demand is scarce“.

Supply is Solved

• AI helps ship products fast/cheap (and will continue to be faster/cheaper)

• Token & blockchain help bootstrap network (L1/L2, DePIN, DeAI)

• Infrastructure is getting cheaper & easier to access

Demand is Scarce

• Real users are limited (same group of retail)

• Institutions remain cautious

• Revenue is the constraint

Investors used to invest in innovations & infrastructure, there used to be a premium on infrastructure that gets passed from one narrative to the other (e.g. from L1/L2 to modular thesis to Restaking to AI infra and privacy). That premium has shifted.

Infrastructure premium has shifted to distribution premium — being able to successfully acquire users (retail, institution) put your project ahead of the peers, which will reflect well on product adoption & token valuation.

It’s the shift from “how big this can get?” to “who actually use it?”

The talk that resonates this the most for me is

1. From Boring to Billions: How RWAs Won Crypto, and What’s Next

• RWAs did not take off in the previous cycle because it lacked real demand. Speculative yields ran high across sectors — P2E games, Defi/points system resulting in high conservative yields opportunities (stablecoin fixed yields at 30-40% vs. T-Bill yields of 4-5%)

• Now it’s the other way around. Speculative yields is gone and T-Bill/RWA yields is higher than or at the same level as Defi yields

• On-chain allocators (especially stablecoin holders) gained real demand for T-Bills instead of Defi yields -> PMF emerged for RWAs

• BlackRock/Larry Fink publicly support tokenization + Improved U.S. regulatory clarity and structures = perfect inflection point for growth

• Supply side got stronger (e.g., JP Morgan tokenized money market fund, BlackRock’s BUIDL)

• Demand side primarily from on-chain capital allocators: stablecoins, foundations, treasury managers — they lack easy traditional access to these assets (no bank accounts, can’t easily buy T-Bills).

• Traditional investors generally prefer off-chain versions (cheaper/easier) unless the tokenized version offers clear advantages

• Examples of tokenized products becoming superior on-chain

  • Off-chain: Apollo private credit fund (9% yield, quarterly redemption)

  • On-chain: Instant daily liquidity (for a fee) + Morpho enables borrowing/looping (e.g. borrow at 2% against 9% yield)

• Defi composability + liquidity + enhanced yields attract new on-chain demand

• Challenges remain on liquidty due to lack of necessity for most current capital allocators to go on-chain (they already have easy off-chain access).

• Meaningful improvements needed to bring them on-chain (fractionalization, 24/7 trading, faster settlement, atomic swaps, better composability in DeFi)

• One good example is Ethena swapping between basis trades and T-Bills for yield flooring. Future consumer-facing apps using tokenized assets in the background to generate yields on idle capital, could drive more demand and therefore liquidity to RWAs.

2. Is Crypto Hiring Cooked for 2026 by Dan Eskow - Up Top

• Hiring strongly correlates with price — significantly down compared to last year

• Recent layoffs have occurred at prominent tier-1 companies/projects, including Uniswap, Magic Eden, OKX, and others that were expected to be more stable

• More people are going on interviews but at the same time salary trends are increasing

• Laid-off individuals are frequently high-quality talent who were simply on the “wrong side” of the pivot, creating a pool of experienced candidates available in the market

• Low fear index + high-quality laid-off talent = best time to hire senior/experienced people due to reduced competition for them

• Candidates are increasingly uninterested in projects without a token or clear token launch plan (one candidate explicitly rejected opportunities lacking this)

• Shift away from “believe in something” / generational wealth via tokens → preference for proof over promises and stability over moonshots.

• Low/declining demand: Ecosystem leads, partnership managers, community managers, Discord moderators, general growth roles tied to alt-L1s/rollups (era described as “super dead”).

• High demand: Corporate/SaaS-trained sales people who can operate in professional environments, manage CRM processes, run structured sales/follow-up processes, and target real (non-crypto-native) companies

• Institutions (e.g., Morgan Stanley reportedly hiring ~26 crypto roles) are leaning into the downturn and value crypto-native talent.

• Advice for early-stage founders: Screen for actual talent rather than resume pedigree/experience (many founders fail at this).

• Be willing to take calculated risks on less proven candidates and move quickly (”hire quick, fire quick”). Avoid over-relying on saturated talent pools targeted by everyone else.

• Compensation must be at fair market cash value; low cash + huge upside/token promises no longer work.

• DePIN aggregate metrics: ~$72 million in revenues vs. ~$10 billion in market cap

• Revenues are low, inconsistent, and often cyclical

• Subsidy ratio: Percentage of operator payments from emissions vs. real revenues.

Before we dive into central themes driving conversations at Consensus HK, let’s talk about the state of the market, focusing on crypto value stack.

Since the beginning of time, there are 4 key layers in the stack, each with different purposes, capturing different kinds of value.

App layer has been the layer that captures most attention & speculative value

• During 2018 ICO boom: tokens represent the app layer. Speculation ran high, tokens pumped 1,000 - 10,000% due to its novelty fueled by hype & speculation of blockchain

• During 2020-21 Defi summer & P2E szn: Defi apps and Web3 games represent the app layer. Uniswap forks, Aave forks, Ohm forks, Axie Infinity, P2E games all delivering hundreds of thousands of APY for farming or buying the NFTs and playing the games. Again, fueled by hype & speculation of Defi, tokenomics experimentations, and P2E games incentives.

Then launchpads happened

Things change during 2023-25 szn where memecoins gained popularity. @Pumpfun captured the opportunity through the creation of memecoin launchpad, enabling anyone to launch a token in less than a minute. After the proliferation of pumpfun, variations of launchpads kept spawning left & right with @virtuals_io arguably the most successful, nailing AI agent narrative.

Common thread across app layer & launchpad cycles is attention, hype, and speculation.

While the loop is looping, the platform often derives the highest amount of value

• Investors spent hundreds of millions in P2E games

• OHM/TIME Wonderland had hundreds of millions in treasury

• Pumpfun made $500-$800M (forgot the exact number)

• Virtuals made $50M+

  

Every new trend is often accompanied by forks & copies. Novel forks derive more value than direct copies but every time a new trend happens, value derived tend to get lower and lower and lower.

We’re at a point where not a lot of speculative value is flowing anymore (i.e. fun & excitement practically gone, CT aren’t trading/investing)

That begs the question — if there’s no new stuff, no excitement, no speculation in crypto, then what’s next?

It’s integrating with traditional industries

(i.e. selling to enterprises, institutions, startups, everyday consumers)

If there’s no value in selling or playing games of hot potatoes in Web3, you have to go beyond Web3 to make money. There’s no other choice.

This brings us to middleware & infrastructure

Infra players spent the last half a decade building infra in the shadow. A few players already have a lot of B2B customers in Web3 and are selling to institutions. Some are exploring ways to nail down institutional sales.

Middleware is also in the same both as infra, trying to onboard institutions, enterprises, and builders outside of Web3 to adopt Web3 solutions.

The decline in speculative value put the spotlight on middleware & infrastructure. Web3 industry maturing means more emphasis on utilities, problems & solutions, revenue & traction, rather than tokens & speculation.

The shift is gradually getting reflected in token prices (i.e. $HYPE resilience during market dumps due to strong revenue + traction in HIP-3 infra)

The trend here is that crypto is maturing, and capital is flowing into middleware & infrastructure but challenges/hurdles remain in onboarding institutions, enterprises, startups outside of Web3.

The market just hit a brick wall. In less than a week, gold is down 13%, silver has tanked 30%, and a liquidation cascade larger than FTX has swept through the majors. But while the traders are staring at the technical indicators, a massive architectural shift is happening under the surface.

Crypto Bloodbath

The market is at a critical point in the span of less than a week,

• Gold is down ~13% from peak

• Silver is down ~30% from peak

• BTC & ETH are down 12% and 17% respectively

Billions wiped in liquidation cascade at a much bigger scale than the previous Covid, LUNA, or FTX crash. This is a result of risk-off market environment, exacerbated by escalating geopolitical tensions (US-Iran) in combination with Kevin Warsh getting picked as new Fed Chair (known to be more hawkish) and low liquidity environment during the weekend.

RSI across the board is at oversold territory and Crypto Fear & Greed is back to Extreme Fear.

On the token performance side of things, only Hyperliquid/$HYPE was able to hold its ground. It shortly fell to $28 and got scooped back up to $32 like nothing happened.

The reasons behind the recent HYPE run up

• Initial team unlocks bounded for $100M-$200M in HYPE, people expected hundreds of millions to be dumped. Turns out, only 7-10% of this translated to sell pressure due to team holding & staking the rest

• Large sells by whales and Tornado Cash-linked clusters who have been selling since early Jan tapered off by late Jan

• HYPE DATs ramped up accumulation off the back of exhausted sells, accumulating at rapid pace

• Sideliners fomo’ed into the trade, sparking a rally up from $20-$22 level

All of this while HIP-3 garnered success from heightened volume across front-ends and across commodities, tokenized stocks, and crypto assets volume.

Goes to show how powerful it can be to have more net buyers + value prop of being on-chain NYSE + aligned app layer that accrues revenue to token holders.

OpenClaw

On the AI side of things, OpenClaw (previously known as Moltbot and Clawdbot, your personal AI assistant that knows you and can do a lot of things for you) went viral thanks to the Moltbook experiment where AI discuss & share ideas in plain text in different forums (i.e. Reddit for AI). Many called this fascinating & terrifying at the same time.

Not because of the conversations, but the risk of having confidential information (API keys, credentials) exposed to the internet. The hype & security concerns are equally growing pretty fast for OpenClaw.

Several crypto AI projects tried to leverage off of the hype to bring back the Crypto AI meta, some even hijacked the forums to shill token tickers. None were successful in bringing the hype back.

The Shared Private State

Crypto has lost much of its charm. For the first time ever, many OGs or analysts in the space are pivoting to stocks and commodities or every other assets that pump.

Crypto has been in this deadlock of ranging up and down at this price for a long while. The macro backdrop (tariff & geopolitical tensions) keep on compressing the BTC & ETH valuation down while propping up gold & silver.

Equities are in a similar predicament but when they recover, they tend to recover far more than crypto and then rally afterwards.

Number of crypto OGs going down, general on-chain activity is going down, the speculation from on-chain trenches is also going down, and the worse part? X algo killing general CT engagement, writers are migrating to Substack, video content are migrating to Instagram and Tiktok.

It simply just feels like everything is dead.

Is everything in crypto dead?

I don’t think so. But you can make a judgement based on what I observe in the market below ↓

1. Privacy narrative is leading and is going strong with Privacy 2.0

Bags App bought back a hint of on-chain trench experience. The narrative this time around is Claude Code vibe-coding experiments.

If you’re not caught up with Bags App yet, their playbook is pretty ingenious — give tech Twitter incentives and they’ll come running to CT (i.e. give them a taste of crypto and they’ll onboard themselves).

• Step 1 — KOL launch a token, acquiring a good chunk of it

• Step 2 — Reach out to general tech devs (preferably broke ones)

• Step 3 — Utilize a Bags App feature that allows that dev to claim the token as well as the fees accumulated on that token

• Step 4 — KOL dumps, profiting off of tech devs

$10k-30k tend to accumulate on tokens with good story & a good trading volume. Broke devs see this money and tend to just grab it without understanding the ramification or the consequence of being an owner of a coin.

What happens next is Bags App community coming after the devs, pushing them to pump their bags. This reminds me of early days Believe but worse, instead of manually onboarding Web2 enterpreneurs, Bags App trick them into it, targeting the most vulnerable bunch.
